AIR CONDITIONERS

The average Air Conditioner will cool your home for approximately 16-18 years.   Regular Maintenance is one of the best things you can do to prolong the life of your system.

Proper Air Conditioner installation is critical. No matter how well your new heating and air system is made, it won’t perform well without a quality installation.

Invest in as much SEER as your Budget allows.  Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) is a measurement of the efficiency of your cooling system over an entire season. The higher the SEER, the higher the efficiency. Before 2006, most cooling systems were rated 8 - 10 SEER. In 2006, the minimum efficiency became 13 SEER. Today, energy-saving air conditioners,  can be ultra-high efficiency. For example, an air conditioner that is up to 25.5 SEER is 155% more efficient than a 10-SEER system; a 16-SEER system is 60% more efficient than a 10-SEER system.

     FURNACES

The average gas furnace will keep you warm for about 20 years.  So think long-term about efficiency and features that you want your new heater to include.

As with your Air Conditioner, Installation is critical. No matter how well your new furnace is made, it won’t perform well without a quality installation.

Just like with and Air Conditioner, when purchasing a new heater you should invest in a high AFUE. Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) measures the efficiency of your furnace. The higher the AFUE, the more efficient your gas or oil furnace is. An 80% AFUE furnace converts 80% of the fuel into heat; the other 20% is lost up the chimney. Most furnaces installed in the past 15 years are around 65% -- 70% AFUE. Today’s minimum standard is 78% AFUE, but many rebate and tax credit incentives are tied to heating efficiencies above 95% AFUE.

    THERMOSTATS

Invest in a dependable thermostat for your HVAC system.  There are a number of thermostats out there, but they may not be the right one for your equipment.

Thermostats come in a variety of sizes, models, setups, etc., that are tailored to your specific system wants and needs. For simple, user-friendly options to programmable systems that can help you save money.

What is a programmable thermostat? These smart thermostats work with your schedule to provide heating and cooling capabilities when you need them. You can set your HVAC system to run when you are home, or right before you get home, so that your system isn't running when you don't need it to. This can help you save energy and may, in turn, help you save money on heating and cooling costs.

  DUCTING DESIGN

If you have a forced air furnace or central air conditioner, you have ductwork that carries the air your equipment creates to different rooms in the house. Ducts are typically sheet metal or flexible.   Ducting that is 20  or more years old, probably needs to be replaced. Older flexible ducts often have very poor insulation, may have asbestos as the insulation material, and they likely have rips and tears. In addition, many contractors do not properly seal the duct connections when they're installed which leads to the air you're paying to create to be dissipated in the attic, basement, and walls. This is not what you want.

Improve Comfort by Sealing and insulating ducts can help with common comfort problems, such as rooms that are too hot in the summer or too cold in the winter.
